Artisan Meadows is a micro-farm located just outside Memphis, TN.
My goal is self-sufficiency -- especially with our food. My husband and I are in the process of raising and growing almost all that we eat. We raise rabbits, sheep, pigs, chickens, and even bees. Square foot gardening has caught our interest, so we grow a wide variety of vegetables too. We even have a few fledgling fruit trees.
In addition to the farming, I am a multi-media artist. Using wool from my sheep, I do spinning, weaving, and felting. I also do a lot of work with polymer clay.
This blog chronicles both our growth as a micro-farm, and my work as an artist. I hope to connect with like-minded people, offer whatever advice or help I can, and learn a lot from all of you in the process!
Marcy weaves, spins, knits and occasionally dyes. Her work is mostly examples for her teaching and writing, and one-of-a-kind pieces for exhibits. Her love for fiber dates back to her childhood when she learned hand-stitching from her paternal grandmother in her native Italy. She later learned that her maternal Lithuanian grandmother spun linen for house hold textiles. It must be in her genes.
Passing it on is important, so she teaches and writes. A fellow of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi in weaving, spinning and knitting, Marcy has been teaching fiber classes with the Guild for 30 years, currently at the Mississippi Craft Center. She also teaches for guilds and conferences around the county. She is the regular columnist for Shuttle Spindle & Dyepot, the quarterly publication of the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc, and has been writing that column, Right from the Start, for 12 years.
Local Yarn shops
Located in Southaven, MS, Hank of Yarn opened in October, 2007, and draws customers from the tri-state area. Henrietta (Hank) Davis has been a knitter since the age of 12, and is realizing her dream of owning a yarn shop. Hank of Yarn, known for the friendly, knowledgeable staff and wide selection of products, is the only yarn shop in north Mississippi. Come anytime and knit or crochet with us in our comfortable seating area, or come on Thursday evenings and knit or crochet with us till 9 pm. During this time, we frequently hold knitalongs, have parties (pajama, holiday, etc.), and surprises (such as back/hand massages from a massage therapist, or a beautician doing eyebrow waxing).
Located in Oxford, MS, at Knit1 Oxford, we are passionate about knitting and igniting the inner artist. We are here to encourage, support and advise our customers from a project's inception to its last stitch. We offer a wide selection of yarns, from the economical to the extraordinary, and a large inventory of patterns, pins, buttons, baskets, books and bags.
