Mississippi Craft Center Named 2010 Travel Attraction of the Year by Mississippi Tourism Association
The Mississippi Tourism Association named the Mississippi Craft Center its Travel Attraction of the Year at the Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Tupelo, MS, Tuesday, March 2, 2010. Governor Haley Barbour addressed the conference and spoke of the importance of tourism to the State of Mississippi.

Accepting the award, Executive Director Julia Daily stated, “What an honor for the dedicated staff members, committed board and volunteers to receive such an award for the operation of our magnificent facility. However, it is a special honor for our talented artisans, the members of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi. Their fine craft work entices travelers from all over the world, and more often than not, goes home in visitors’ suitcases!”

Opening in 2007, the new Craft Center has experienced visitors from all 50 states and 27 foreign countries and is the home to the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi Exhibiting Members. Growing from 30 members in 1973, the Guild now boasts more than 400 members today. The Center has 250 annual craft demonstrations by master craftsmen, classes, a sales gallery, events and exhibits. The mission of the Guild is to preserve, promote, market, educate and encourage the highest standard of excellence in regional crafts.

In addition to events and exhibits, the Center has become a renowned space for weddings and corporate retreats.

Desoto Art Council
Our Vision

The DeSoto Arts Council is the arts agency for DeSoto County, Mississippi and the surrounding region with a mission is to stimulate increased participation in the arts, integrate art into people’s everyday lives, advance community support of the arts, and use the arts to affect community unity and change.
Established in 1999, the non-profit organization serves 144,706 residents, including the 29,800 children attending DeSoto County Schools, one of the largest school districts in the state of Mississippi in one of the 40 fastest growing counties of the United States. The area’s rapid expansion makes the arts and the accompanying celebration of a sense of place for all in DeSoto County—newcomers and lifelong residents—more important than ever.

DeSoto County, in northwest Mississippi, includes the cities of Hernando, Horn Lake, Olive Branch, Southaven, and Walls. The Mississippi River is the western boundary and Memphis, Tennessee is the northern border. Here the delta meets the hills. The formerly rural region’s rich culture includes rock and roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis, celebrated blues musicians Memphis Minnie, Big Walter Horton, Gus Cannon, and Kenny Brown, best selling writer John Grisham, and actor James Earl Jones.
DAC offers a wide range of activities and diverse programming in a variety of locations around DeSoto County.

- On September 17, 2011, the Desoto Art Council officially moved to the historical Banks House, next door to the old location. The Banks House is a wonderful 100 year old antebellum house that fits DAC beautifully.

Chimneyville Weavers and Spinners Guild

The Chimneyville Weavers and Spinners Guild (CWSG) was formed in 1980 by a group of handweavers who wanted to preserve and expand their craft in Mississippi. Several guild members are also juried members of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi, which helped form the CWSG and with whom they partner in a number of events.

The Chimneyville Weavers and Spinners Guild is also a member of the Handweavers’ Guild of America (HGA), the national organization of weavers and other fiber artisans and artists.

The goals of the CWSG are to foster weaving and spinning, to provide an environment of growth and sharing for its members, and to educate the public about the role of fiber today and throughout Mississippi history.

Our Guild Blog!

We are a guild of spinners that meet every third Sunday of the month from 1:30 PM until 5 PM. Times are approximate, unless there is a specific program scheduled you are welcome to join us at any time during the afternoon!
We meet in the Family Life building at St. Francis of Assisi Church located at 8151 Chimneyrock Blvd just off Germantown Parkway in Cordova, TN.
The Guild is currently undergoing some structural and organizational changes and we look forward to participation and ideas from members, both returning and new.
Meetings almost always include a Show and Tell time where everyone can share their projects OR acquisitions. One of the new things we hope to achieve with this blog is to feature the show and tell items (and spinners if willing!) in photographs! Join us for the fun!
